My name is Melissa Maillis (née Thompson).
I am a born and bred Aboriginal Australian woman from Darwin, NT, with proud Waanyi (Waanji) roots connected to Lawn Hill and Alexandria Station in north-west Queensland. My Aboriginal lineage comes through my great-great-grandmother, Opal Maginmarm of the Waanyi Tribe, who married Chinese gold rush migrant Sam Ah Bow, and their story of resilience and survival sits at the heart of who I am and the work I do today.
I have had the privilege of witnessing traditional ceremonies over the years, and while I do not speak the Waanji language, those experiences have deepened my respect for culture, Country and the responsibility that comes with carrying my family’s story forward. Indigenous art and the way it holds memory, place and story continue to inspire my creativity and shape the way I approach design, storytelling and visual communication.
I now live in Darwin with my husband and our three boys, balancing family life with running my own media and design business from home and developing Ngurra Living, a project focused on creating more pathways to home and belonging for First Nations people. With a Certificate IV in Design and years of experience in property media, branding and digital design, I bring a practical, hands-on approach to every project while staying grounded in kindness, integrity and community impact.
My vision is to use my creative skills to help others tell their stories, build stability and feel a stronger sense of place—whether that’s through a home, a brand or a simple image that makes someone feel seen. Each step I take with Ngurra Living and my work more broadly is guided by gratitude, compassion and a belief that small, consistent acts of care can create meaningful change for our mob and our communities.
